Review:

Gray’s anatomy for students is a staple for students trying to go further than a typical atlas might. Clinical boxes embedded within the text helps the anatomy feel relevant – I learn best by being able to visualise how the knowledge would be of use so these references to clinical content really helped me to learn the anatomy itself. For anatomy it is crucial that there are detailed and accurate pictures which illustrate the important concepts. Gray’s provides this and more with many hundreds of illustrations besides a text which manages to describe the anatomy and the clinical applications of it. It is cleverly edited with enough technical detail in the text for the reader to imagine what is being said while not too much as to be inaccessible to someone learning anatomy for the first time. It describes the relationships in rich detail building up labels in a clear manner. Embedded in these descriptions are the pictures and clinical cases to help with understanding of the point. At key intervals Gray’s includes tables which summarises the important information about the muscles – especially helpful for revision. The main drawback to Gray’s anatomy is that it does not cover neuroanatomy which would have gone one step further to making this the only book needed for learning anatomy. However I can forgive this since the overall quality of the book is so high – the surface anatomy is a treat. Overlaying photos are key structures and descriptions of how to find these structures on the surface. Following on from the surface anatomy in each section are the clinical cases – a handy revision aid which allows you to see this knowledge in use. I was provided a copy of Gray’s by the publisher for review.
